A great example of what the I-Can All Stars is all about is Kevin Lewis. This young man seized the opportunity to expand his reach and has become responsible for his life and epitomizes the mantra of the I-Can All Stars: “The responsibility of Self-Determination.”
“I remember the first time I met Coach Rock. He came up to me and asked if I would like to play on his team practice later that night. I went to practice and it was intense. He yelled and pushed us to the point of exhaustion and I thought about quitting. He told me that he was going to be hard on me and the team because he wanted us to make it out of the hood and to be successful young men.”
During Kevin’s formative years he attended Locke High School (1998-2002) and furthered his education at Compton Community College (2002-2004), where he earned an AA degree. Thanks to his exposure with the I-Can All Stars he ultimately received a scholarship to attend the University of Wyoming (2004-2007) and is working on completing degree requirements in Social Science.
Kevin’s occupation for the past 5 years has been professional basketball. He’s played in Mexico and Japan and will be earning a living this season in Europe.
“Coach Rock taught me mental toughness. I also learned that hard work, focus and dedication make it possible to accomplish anything I set my mind to.”
Congratulations and all the best to a young man, Kevin Lewis, who represents the purpose of this program in every significant way.
